Intranets will become social

A very interesting posting by Oscar Berg on Why traditional intranets fail today’s knowledge workers. A lot of very true observations:

It’s not a coincidence that many knowledge workers find it much easier to find information on the web than in their internal systems and that the intranet plays a marginal role in their daily work.

Indeed intranets are very often static, managed by a few people with extensive approval processes. I strongly believe that this is going to change, because in particular knowledge workers need the right information fast at their fingertips. This is why the internal blogs and wikis within IBM have become a, if not the essential knowledge platform. Intranets will leverage more and more social software components, from wikis, blogs, microblogging, social networking to social bookmarking. And these tools will play to the biggest advantage of the knowledge workers, if the services are integrated, people and knowledge (not file) centric. And on top we will see more and more features like recommendations based on social analytics included as feature. The system will recommend people and knowledge and therefore go beyond the tradtional intranet experience:

The social intranet is not just about adding a layer of social collaboration tools; it is a platform that combines the powers of push with the powers of pull to supply anyone who participates and contributes within an extended enterprise with the information, knowledge and connections they need to make the right decisions and act to fulfill their objectives. It equips everyone with the tools that allows them to participate, contribute, attract, discover, find and connect with each other to exchange information and knowledge and/or collaborate.

I am really looking forward to the next generation of our IBM social software platform Lotus Connections.
